Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology
Emory University School of Medicine
Beau Bruce, MD, MS, joined Emory in 2008 as an assistant professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at Emory University School of Medicine. He serves as a physician/specialist in neuro-ophthalmology at Emory Eye Center.
Dr. Bruce's main research interests include the epidemiology of idiopathic intracranial hypertension and the application of non-mydriatic photography and telemedicine to the diagnosis of neuro-ophthalmic disease, particularly in non-ophthalmic settings.
In 2011 and 2012, results of his study with Emory colleagues titled “Nonmydriatic Ocular Fundus Photography in the Emergency Department” were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology. These papers showed that non-mydriatic (no dilation required) digital fundus photography cameras in the emergency department are helpful in triaging patients who come in headache, neurologic disorders, severely elevated blood pressure, or visual disturbances.
He is the co-author on 13 peer-reviewed papers (as of October 2012) dealing with the topic of idiopathic intracranial hypertension, including "Racial Differences in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension," Neurology, 2008; “Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension in Men,” Neurology, 2009; “Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: Relation Between Obesity and Visual Outcomes,” Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, 2012.
Dr. Bruce is an Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute investigator and scholar, a member of the American Academy of Neurology and a diplomate in neurology of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. In 2012 he was awarded the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society (NANOS) Young Investigator Award.
