Paul Courtright, DrPH

Visiting Scholar (adjunct), Emory Global Vision Initiative


Dr. Paul Courtright established and has served as the co-director of the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) of Tumaini University in Moshi, Tanzania, for the past 10 years. In that role, he has taught, conducted research and directed programs throughout eastern Africa for KCCO. Prior to that service, he established and directed the BC Centre for Epidemiologic and International Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia.

In 2011 he and Susan Lewallen, MD, also of KCCO, will help create Emory Eye Center’s inaugural program in global health that will explore strategies to ensure that underserved communities in Georgia, and those internationally, have access to and utilize high quality eye care services.

He has published more than 150 scientific articles and six books/manuals, most related to eye care needs in Africa and Asia. His research interests are in health systems strengthening, cataract, trachoma, childhood blindness, eye complications of leprosy and other conditions common in developing countries. He received the American Academy of Ophthalmology International Blindness Prevention Award in 2008.

He holds memberships in several medical associations including the International Society of Geographic & Epidemiologic Ophthalmology and the International Epidemiology Association, among others. He is a member of the International Trachoma Initiative’s Trachoma Expert Committee and serves as a Consultant to the World Health Organization. He has served on the editorial boards of Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Eye Care, and was editor of the Trachoma special issue of Ophthalmic Epidemiology. He received faculty research awards at the University of British Columbia in 1996 and 1998.
