Research (Basic Research) Section
Our laboratory performs new drug, contact lens, and contact
lens maintenance solution toxicology evaluations. New contact
lens polymers and contact lens care solutions are tested by fitting
rabbits with contact lenses for daily or extended wear regiments. Other
techniques to assess ocular toxicity are used in the laboratory,
such as noninvasive fluorophotometry to determine corneal epithelial
permeability, corneal endothelial permeability, tear turn-over
rate, and aqueous humor turn-over rate. Many other techniques
have proven to be useful, such as, corneal epithelial wound closure
rate, corneal stromal wound strength, etc.
We are presently a Specular Microscopy Reading Center for both two multiple center surgical clinical trials. The corneal endothelial cell specular microscopy morphology is analyzed from photographic images and computer captured images.
