Samantha McIntosh, OD

Instructor of Ophthalmology
Section of Optometry

Samantha McIntosh, OD, joined Emory Eye Center’s optometry division in September 2017.

Dr. McIntosh completed her undergraduate education at the University of Miami, where she earned a degree in biochemistry along with minors in sociology and chemistry. She studied optometry at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry. She followed that with a residency in primary care with an emphasis in geriatrics and low vision, also at NSU. Dr. McIntosh is currently pursuing a Master of Science in clinical vision research.

During her time at NSU, Dr. McIntosh taught student optometric physicians in the vision rehabilitation lab and lectured on topics such as the management of Wolfram syndrome with an emphasis on visual function. She is interested in investigating the use of colored filters to improve the reading sustainability and comfort of visually impaired individuals.

“As a young child, I would spend time with my great-grandmother, who was blind,” Dr. McIntosh says. “It was very difficult to watch her struggle with her vision loss and be unable to enjoy her golden years. Now, as a low vision rehabilitation specialist, I’m able to assist visually impaired individuals function in their daily lives, allowing them to enjoy life instead of feeling separated from it.”
