Over the years, the long-term research interest of our laboratory has been the physiology of the corneal endothelium, in particular, the cellular mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of corneal hydration and transparency. Our laboratory research has focused on endothelial barrier and pump functions, how these functions are altered by disease (such as Fuch’s Endothelial Dystrophy) and wound healing, and how alterations in function correlate to endothelial morphology.
More recently, in collaboration with Dr. Edelhauser in our department, our laboratory has been investigating the potential for delivering drugs to the retina and posterior eye across the sclera, either by subconjunctival or by periocular injection for use in the treatment of retinal degenerations and posterior segment disease.
