  • December 16, 2016 | Vision impairment and eye diseases continue to be concerns for Ebola survivors. The acute outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) has subsided in West Africa, but the medical community continues to learn about long-term complications for survivors – including the potential for blinding eye disease. One particular condition of concern is uveitis, according to research published in the December 2016 issue of Ophthalmology by physicians from the Emory Eye Center and ELWA Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia.

Thousands of emergency department visits during the holidays each year are due to toy-related injuries, with nearly half being to the head or face. Lessen the chances of an ER visit with children or grandchildren by paying attention to toys and other gifts that could lead to eye injuries – and what you can do to help lower risk.

  • December 8, 2016 | Maria Aaron, MD, is named secretary of AAO Annual Meeting. Emory Eye Center ophthalmologist Maria Aaron, MD, has been selected as secretary for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Annual Meeting. The position is a three-year appointment based on AAO member voting.

  • December 6, 2016 | Eye Center Faculty Are Recognized During Annual Celebration of Faculty. Thirteen Emory Eye Center faculty members were recognized during the Emory School of Medicine’s Celebration of Faculty Excellence ceremony and reception on December 1. More than 250 faculty members representing each department from the School of Medicine were recognized that evening.

  • November 25, 2016 | Hernandez earns Fellow designation from the American Academy of Optometry. Elaime Hernandez, OD, FAAO, has earned the designation of Fellow from the American Academy of Optometry.

  • November 8, 2016 | November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month: Emory Eye Center Physicians Help Screen Grady Patients for Eye Disease. Diabetes affects more than 29 million Americans, making it a health concern for families everywhere. A common complication of diabetes is diabetic eye disease – a group of sight-threatening eye conditions that people with diabetes might develop.

(ATLANTA) More than 20 Emory Eye Center physicians helped educate other providers at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) annual conference in October. Three of Emory Eye Center's faculty members and one first-year resident were recognized at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) annual conference in Chicago last week.

  • October 6, 2016 | Physicians Teach Each Other About Eye Cancers and Treatments
    (ATLANTA)  Physicians from multiple states gathered at Emory Eye Center on September 30 for the opportunity to learn more about eye cancers and possible treatments. The event, known as the SEOP (Southeastern Ocular Oncology/Pathology) conference, featured guest lecturer Bertil Damato, MD, PhD, FRCOphth, a professor of ophthalmology and radiation oncology and the director of ocular oncology with the University of California, San Francisco.

  • September 16, 2016 | Emory Eye Center Physicians Win Prestigious Book Award. Emory Eye Center physicians Valerie Biousse, MD, and Nancy Newman, MD, were awarded first prize in the neurology category of the 2016 British Medical Association (BMA) book awards. Their book, Neuro-Ophthalmology Illustrated, Second Edition, is an up-to-date, beautifully illustrated guide to help readers recognize a patient's signs and symptoms, localize pathology, develop a differential diagnosis and select a management strategy.

  • Sept. 12, 2016 | Emory Eye Center to Host Education Program for Pediatric Ophthalmologists. Pediatric ophthalmologists and other ophthalmic subspecialists will come together Sept. 16-17, 2016, for an opportunity to learn more about pediatric ophthalmology and to share cases from their own practices. The gathering, known as the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Meeting of the Southeast (POSMS), will be sponsored by the Emory Eye Center and Emory University School of Medicine's Ophthalmology Department.

(ATLANTA) Emory Eye Center is again noted as a top ophthalmology center in the United States, according to the prestigious U.S. News & World Report guide to America’s top medical institutions.

  • August 26, 2016 | $3,023,456 Five-Year Award Announced by NEI for Emory Eye Center Vision Research. (ATLANTA) Emory Eye Center Director of Research P. Michael Iuvone, PhD,  and his colleagues announced today the news of a first-year funding award of $624,000 for their “P30 Core Grant for Vision Research” proposal by the National Eye Institute (NEI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

  • August 18, 2016 | Center to Host 6th Annual Southeastern Ocular Oncology/Pathology Seminar (SEOP) Emory Eye Center will host the sixth annual Southeastern Ocular Oncology/Pathology Seminar (SEOP) on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, in the Eye Center’s Learning Resources Center, Calhoun Auditorium, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    (ATLANTA) Nine Emory Eye Center ophthalmologists were selected from the Atlanta metropolitan region as America’s Top Doctors® by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., and are featured in the July 2016 issue of Atlanta magazine: Allen Beck, MD; Valérie Biousse, MD; Hans E.   • May 25, 2016 | Emory Eye Center Postdocs Honored at Emory Research Symposium
    (ATLANTA) Emory Eye Center’s postdoctoral research scientists placed among the top honorees at the May 19, 2016, Emory University School of Medicine 9th Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium.  This symposium featured work from more than 100 postdoctoral fellows from the Emory campus.

  • May 23, 2016 | Child Survivors of Eye Cancer Gather for RB Kids Day Picnic
    (ATLANTA) The eighteenth Emory Eye Center Retinoblastoma (RB) Kids Day Picnic was held on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Mason Mill Park in Decatur, Georgia. This very special event was a day of fun and celebration for both the young patients who have faced the childhood cancer of the eye called retinoblastoma and their families.

  • May 16, 2016 | Researchers Honored at 2016 ARVO Annual Meeting
    (ATLANTA) With 60 scientific papers, posters and symposiums, Emory Eye Center researchers were leading scientific contributors to the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2016 Annual Meeting, “Research: A Vision for Hope,” in Seattle, Washington, May 1-5. Their topics ranged from groundbreaking research on ocular melanoma to challenges and discoveries on Ebola and the eye.

  • May 3, 2016 | $150,000 Gift from Alcon Foundation Establishes Global Ophthalmology Fellowship. (ATLANTA) The Alcon Foundation has pledged $150,000 to Emory Eye Center to establish a Global Ophthalmology Emory (GO-E) Fellowship. The fellowship, one of only four in the nation, will provide first-person clinical experience in both local and international settings and a strong research foundation in ophthalmic public health issues.
