Emory Eye Center physician named one of six "Health Care Heroes" by Atlanta Business Chronicle

Doyle Stulting, MD, PhD, director of the Cornea Service at Emory Eye Center and medical director of the newly opened Emory Laser Vision, won the prestigious "Health Care Hero" award presented by the Atlanta Business Chronicle at their annual Health Care Heroes Awards and Forum event on May 13. The winner in the "Innovations" category, Dr. Stulting was cited for his groundbreaking artificial cornea transplant surgery last year-the first such surgery in the United States.

Corneal transplantation has become almost common in this country, but there are failures, says Stulting. Occasionally, the patient rejects donor tissue and transplantation is not successful. For these patients, who have had multiple rejections of donor tissue, the artificial cornea device is welcome hope. "This new surgery is for people who have no other way of having their vision restored," says Dr. Stulting.

Donna Jean Jacobs, a young wife and mother of two from Alabama, became the first recipient in this country to undergo artificial cornea transplantation with the AlphaCor, a new artificial cornea device developed in Australia. For her, the possibility of "seeing the color of my boys' eyes" was a major reason to go through yet another surgery. Her exuberance about her surgeon, Dr. Stulting, and the new device were obvious in the Atlanta Business Chronicle feature.

Dr. Stulting joins an impressive list of past "Health Care Hero" recipients. Among this year's winners are: J. Willis Hurst, MD (Emory), who won the Lifetime Achievement Award; Marcia McDonnell who won the Allied Health Professional award; Allen Dollar, MD, who won the Community Outreach award; Georgia Power Company, who won the Employer award; and Charles Henderson, MD, who won the Physician award.
