Emory Eye Center honors its director with a surprise black tie event

On a weekend when most Atlantans were wining and dining their sweethearts, more than 300 Emory Eye Center faculty, staff, donors and other friends paid special tribute to one of their own. On Friday, February 13 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Emory University honored Thomas M. Aaberg, Sr., M.D., on the occasion of his tenth anniversary as chairman and director of the Emory Eye Center.

Even though the Emory Eye Center, which can trace its roots back 125 years, has long been an academic leader for eye care, Dr. Aaberg is responsible for building the department to its current stature as one of the top eye centers in the country, according to rankings in U.S. News & World Report and Ophthalmology Times. His faculty and staff of 23 full-time subspecialty ophthalmologists, four optometrists, 10 research scientists with doctorates, and more than 30 residents and fellows in training provide the most comprehensive ophthalmology services in the state. These researchers provide care to more than 70,000 patients each year at over 30 hospitals and clinics throughout north Georgia. Their expertise ranges from pediatric ophthalmology to refractive surgery to neuro-ophthalmology.

Dr. Aaberg is beloved by his many patients as a competent and compassionate retina specialist. He has helped save the sight of hundreds of individuals suffering from blinding diseases, including macular degeneration, macular holes and diabetic retinopathy. Ophthalmologists worldwide use surgical techniques he developed for the retina (the “film” of the eye) and vitreous (the jelly that fills the eye).

As a grand finale at the event, the Eye Center announced a $1 million endowment named in Dr. Aaberg’s honor. The principal of the endowment will exist in perpetuity and its earnings will help support the training of clinical ophthalmology fellows.
