Emory Eye Center Physician Awarded Senior Scientific Investigator Award by RPB

(ATLANTA) Emory Eye Center’s Hans. E. Grossniklaus, MD, MBA, the F. Phinizy Calhoun Jr. Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the L.F. Montgomery Pathology Laboratory, has been granted a $75,000 Senior Scientific Investigator Award by Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB). RPB Senior Scientific Investigator Awards support nationally recognized senior scientists conducting eye research at medical institutions in the United States. Dr. Grossniklaus, an ophthalmologist and ocular pathologist, is one of 147 scientists at 55 institutions so honored since the award was established in 1987.

“We are very proud that the scientific expertise of Hans Grossniklaus has been recognized in such an extraordinary way,” says Thomas M. Aaberg, MD, director of Emory Eye Center. “Dr. Grossniklaus is an internationally-renowned scholar in eye pathology and most deserving of this award.”

“I plan to use the award for translational research for the treatment of eye melanoma,” says Dr. Grossniklaus. “This includes basic laboratory science studies to understand how drug delivery to the eye melanoma and treatment of metastatic melanoma may be improved. This also includes clinical applications of what we learn in the laboratory,” he continues, “including clinical studies of new drug delivery techniques to the eye melanoma and systemic treatment for metastatic melanoma.”

Dr. Grossniklaus received his medical degree at Ohio State University, completed residencies in ophthalmology and pathology at Case Western Reserve University and fellowships at Wilmer Eye Institute (Johns Hopkins University) and at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C.

Background
